At Edinburgh Airport, your safety and security are our number one priority. We are committed to working with our partners, including Police Scotland, the Civil Aviation Authority, the Centre for the Protection of National Infrastructure, the Department for Transport, and other Government agencies to ensure our passenger’s journeys are as safe and secure as possible.
However, you have a key role to play in reporting anything unusual or suspicious. Help us keep the airport safe and secure for you and your fellow passengers. Don’t ever be concerned about reporting anything, no matter how minor you may think it is – please let us know immediately and we will investigate. You can report things to the Police by calling 101, tell a Police Officer or any member of airport staff.
Security at the airport isn’t just about screening your bags
While most of our passengers will be familiar with our screening processes as they arrive and depart, it is important to note that these are not the only procedures in place to help keep you, your fellow passengers and the airport safe.
We work effectively with our partners, airlines, staff and wider community and use a range of state-of-the art security equipment, and latest techniques for detecting and deterring criminality; some of these measures may not be visible. However, here’s an introduction to some of these initiatives:
“Project Servator” relies on unpredictable and highly visible deployments, designed to deter, deny, disrupt and detect criminality. Deployments can occur across the entire airport and can include vehicle checks and the use of specialist resources, such as Armed Police and Police Search Dogs. The Police Scotland team regularly brief and liaise with staff and businesses around the airport so that staff know what to be on the lookout for and how to report anything suspicious. They are always keen to talk to our passengers to explain what they are doing and to provide reassurance.
Utilising the airport community to help be our eyes and ears
All staff that work at Edinburgh Airport attend regular security training and briefings to ensure they are up-to-date with the latest threat information and security practices, including how to be vigilant for and report suspicious activity.
In addition, we engage regularly with community groups such as plane enthusiast groups, transportation workers as well as retail and cleaning staff. This hand in hand approach between staff and Police Scotland is another example of our total security approach which assists with protecting the airport from any criminal or terrorist activity.
CCTV and Automated Number Plate Recognition (ANPR)
Our in-house screening process ensures security compliance with international regulations, whilst CCTV and ANPR cameras provide twenty-four-hour surveillance capability across the airport. We use UAV Detection Systems and high definition CCTV in all locations with hundreds of cameras that help ensure our customers enjoy a trouble-free journey through the airport.
Our state-of-the-art system, managed from a control rooms, supports the latest video analytics technology such as loiter detection and car registration capture among others. This allows us to monitor people and vehicle movements around the airport and ensures we can respond quickly to situations that arise. Our system continually records images and recordings are stored and managed in accordance with current data protection legislation.
Our staff along with the Police Scotland team are happy to answer any questions that you may have.
