Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo’s rousing sends off for the Tartan Army
Tartan Army fans departing from Edinburgh Airport to support Scotland at the World Cup have been given a rousing send-off ahead of the campaign.
In partnership with the world-famous Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo, a special kilt march was led through the terminal, with pipers escorting travelling Scotland fans to their departure gates as they head to the USA ahead of the team’s first game this weekend.
The airport has worked with the Scottish FA to build excitement for departing supporters, encouraging them to ‘Be Party It’. Celebrations include displays honouring Scottish football legends and the team’s qualification achievement, as well as transforming Icons Sports Bar & Kitchen into Scotland House - the official base for fans within the airport. Around 100 Tartan Army supporters were piped to their gates, as a sea of tartan filled the departures hall.
Gordon Dewar, Chief Executive of Edinburgh Airport, said:
“The Tartan Army is famous around the world and we wanted to create something special to celebrate their spirit and Scotland’s long-awaited return to the World Cup.
“There’s nothing more stirring than the sound of the pipes, and we are delighted to work with our partners at Edinburgh Military Tattoo to showcase Scottish tradition at its very best - and put on a bit of a show for all of the tourists who will be in the airport.
“And, of course, best of luck to Scotland – do us proud!”
Jason Barrett Chief Executive of The Royal Edinburgh Military Tattoo said:
“We’re incredibly proud to be supporting our national team in the World Cup and what better way to send off supporters than in true Tattoo style at Edinburgh Airport. Nothing beats the stirring sound of the pipes!”
Ian Maxwell, Scottish FA Chief Executive, said:
“It’s great to see how excited everyone is for the World Cup – whether they’re making the trip to America or getting behind the team a little closer to home. I know Steve Clarke and the players really appreciate it.
“We saw the footage and images from Edinburgh Airport. What a send-off to give our supporters. It all adds up to creating special memories for those who have followed the team through thick and thin and I’d like to thank the airport staff for getting into the spirit of it all.”
